Organised farm groups
We bring smallholders together into groups and co-operatives, support them to improve productivity, and buy from the group rather than the individual.
We are a mobile-based, cashless business-to-business platform that connects rural smallholder farmers to urban retailers — because food chains should be simple, and everyone should have access to affordable quality food.
Africa wastes around 200 million tonnes of food every year — enough to feed 300 million people. Half of that loss has nothing to do with farming: it comes from inefficient market structures. Another 22% comes from inadequate transport and logistics, 15% from open-air markets and poor storage, and 13% at farm level, because farmers have no access to a formal market at the moment of harvest.
Taimba started with that observation on the ground in Kenya. Neither end of the chain was winning: with six brokers between them, the farmer took the smallest cut and carried all the risk, while the green grocer paid a market price that swung week to week and spent their own money and their own morning getting the produce back to the shop.
We source from the farmer at prices that are farmer-friendly. We then offer retailers that same produce at lower than market prices — enabling them to sell to the final consumer more affordably — and we deliver to their premises for free.

Sorting, grading, crate packing and cold storage at our Nairobi hub — the single biggest lever on how much of a harvest actually reaches a plate.
Orders, deliveries and payments run through one mobile platform, so every consignment is traceable from the farm group to the shop that sold it.
Our buyers are the shops your neighbourhood actually buys food from: informal green grocers — 80% of them women-owned — plus restaurants and cafés, and schools and hospitals feeding hundreds of people a day. 1,200 of them restock with us every month.

More than anything at Taimba, we are focused on our relationship with farmers and retailers. To us, they are not just trading partners, but friends that we just happen to do business with.
Nothing about this model is exotic. It works on a route, and then it works on the next route. That is how we intend to grow it.
Ten routes running today, with room for around 50 across the city. Every new route adds shops at one end and farm groups at the other.
Mombasa first, then Thika and Nakuru — major cities where the same brokered chain costs shopkeepers and farmers the same money.
Uganda and Tanzania are the markets most ready for it, and the ones where our farm-group model transfers with the least friction.
Taimba was founded in Nairobi and is led by Dominique Kavuisya, who started the company after seeing how much food was being lost in rural Kenya for want of storage and a ready market.
The journey of Taimba is the journey of a generation. We seek and continue to move forward with organisations and partners who share our vision for farmers — from accelerators and impact investors to cold-chain and mobility partners.
